What does a meth lab smell like?
Meth labs can have a powerful smell much like ammonia that smells similar to fertilizer or cat urine or window cleaner. It can also have other smells such as rotten egg nail polish or sulphur. Because meth labs use a variety of different chemicals, there is no one single smell that you can classify it as.
What Does Meth Smell Like when it is smoked?
Some characterize this smell as a sweet smell that is much lighter.
Signs of Meth Lab
There are several chemicals and byproducts caused by meth production. Things to look out for include:
- Old Chemical bottles and drums
- Bottles of Acetone, acid, drain cleaner, iodine or paint thinner
- Also look out for LPG tanks, coolers camping stoves and other PPE equipment
If you suspect a meth lab, it is advised you purchase a DIY meth test kit or have a meth inspection conducted at your property.
How long does drug residue last?
Unfortunately, methamphetamine residue is a very sticky residue that is deposited as vapours onto surfaces. Because of this, they can remain on the surfaces for very long periods of time. There was a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health that looked into a house where the meth affected house was left uninhabited for several years. The research found the meth contamination still existed over 5 years later.
